When my friends over at Propeller Consulting reached out to me to see if I would be interested in reviewing Growing Up Social: Raising Relational Kids in a Screen-Driven World I was all over it! I am a huge fan of the 5 Love Languages so when I saw that Gary Chapman was a co-author of the book I knew I wanted to get my hands on it. And like his other book I love this one as well! Ryan and I do not own a television and we do not have Smart Phones. However, we spend our screen time on the computer and our iPads. Now that Miss M is here I have been trying to find balance between screen time and time with her. I also have thought how electronics and social media will play a role in her life. I know it is something Ryan and I will have to discuss and set rules for in the future. Which is why I am glad I am reading this book now!
The book starts out with five A+ skills: Affection, Appreciation, Anger Management, Apology and Attention. The authors cover how these skills are necessary for child’s growth and productivity but also how screen time can effect these traits. There were many times as I read through the chapters I thought back to my teaching days. I thought back to how the students acted a lot like the stories. And it made total sense why they behaved the way they did when you consider how much time is spent with electronics instead of parents.
Then, the book goes on to show how screen time effects the brain, security and shyness and also how it is tied to the Love Languages and parental authority. I have to say within the first chapter it was challenging me. Miss M is still so small and this stuff doesn’t apply to her yet (although I did have to talk to the gym daycare workers as they were putting her in front of the tv!) the concepts do apply to myself. It made me really evaluate how I spend my time with electronics. What an eye opener it was!
The wonderful thing about this book is it gives tips and pointers for parents that are in diverse situations. If screens control your family this book is for you. If your a single parent there are tips for you. If your child fusses when they are told no tv time this book can help. If you have a newborn and you wonder how electronics will play a role in their lives this is a great resource. It is a must read for all parents that are living in this era of electronics and social media!

I hope you all enjoy the book as much as I did! Remember if something challenges you in your thinking and actions it is probably because something needs to change. I had to remind myself of that multiple times while reading this!
